     September 19, 2025 - September 21, 2025
7:00 pm - 3:00 pm A three-day workshop uncovering secret and generally not talked about techniques used in photography to make pictures more believable and visually appealing.

Photography has always been an illusion—but unlike painting or cinema, it carries the authority of truth. A photograph looks like evidence. We trust it instinctively, even in the age of Photoshop and AI. That trust gives photography its greatest power: the power to deceive. So let’s learn to use it with intent, where truth and illusion trade places.

Over two and a half days, we’ll explore how photographers exploit both vision and psychology to shape reality. Drawing on Rudolf Arnheim’s theory of visual perception, we’ll uncover why the eye misleads the brain, and how images can be engineered to take advantage of those blind spots.

But deception doesn’t stop at optics. The real game often happens before the shutter clicks. We’ll look at social engineering as a photographic skill — how charm, misdirection, staged honesty, and subtle manipulation can influence people’s behavior, coax hidden expressions, or even create moments that feel “authentic” while being anything but. These are not ideas I’ve simply read about; they come from professional encounters where persuasion and misdirection weren’t optional, but essential.

Ultimately, we’ll confront the paradox: that by learning how to lie with a camera, we may discover new ways to tell the truth.

This is not about f-stops or lighting ratios. It’s about wielding the camera as a psychological instrument — one you’ve been carrying all along. You’ll leave with sharper instincts, a keener eye, and a deeper appreciation for the artful deception at the heart of photography.
